These questions sit at the chemistry/clinical interface, and the Department of Biochemistry was created to give medical students the tools to answer them and to provide the laboratory infrastructure that allows clinicians to act on those answers every day.
The department has three inter-related strands of activity: undergraduate teaching, research and the provision of diagnostic laboratory services. None of these works in isolation. Students who learn biochemistry in a department that is also running a functional diagnostic laboratory experience the material differently not as abstract theory, but as the foundation of real clinical decisions happening around them. Faculty engaged in research bring the latest scientific thinking into the classroom. Clinicians who use the central laboratory receive diagnostic information generated by people who understand the clinical meaning of the results, not just the technical meaning.
Teaching is based on the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) model and includes lectures, demonstrations, integrated sessions and clinical correlation exercises. The aim is not rote learning but analytical thinking and clinical application.
