Community Medicine

The Department of Community Medicine at SIMS works a bit differently from most clinical departments. Its focus isn't a single ward or a set of patients walking in with specific complaints, but the health of entire communities around Hapur. The bulk of the department's work goes into teaching and training MBBS students, MD postgraduates, and interns in how preventive and community-based healthcare actually functions on the ground.

A big part of this work happens through two training centres that the department runs, the Urban Health Training Centre in Hapur, about 12 km from the college, and the Rural Health Training Centre at Makhimpur, roughly 8 km away. Both function as fully operational centres with a clinical laboratory, labour room, and minor OT, giving students a real setting to practise in rather than just classroom theory.

The department also works closely with the District Hospital to implement national programmes like the Tuberculosis Elimination Programme and the Universal Immunisation Programme, so students can see how these large-scale public health initiatives actually roll out at the district level.

Key Differentiators

Structured Internship Training at CHC Hapur

Out of a 12-week internship period, interns spend 9 weeks at CHC Hapur, rotating through medicine, surgery, and obstetrics & gynaecology for three weeks each. This collaboration with the District Hospital gives interns broad exposure to handling different types of cases in a government healthcare setting, which is quite different from a tertiary teaching hospital.

Community-Based Research as a Core Requirement

Every postgraduate student in the department is required to undertake community-based research for their thesis or dissertation. This isn't optional. It means research here is grounded in real field data from the surrounding population rather than purely lab-based studies.

Dual Rural and Urban Health Training Centres

Having both a rural centre (Makhimpur) and an urban centre (Hapur) running simultaneously gives students exposure to two very different healthcare contexts. Rural populations often have different disease patterns, access issues, and health-seeking behaviours compared to urban ones, and the department's setup allows students to see both.

Advanced Technologies

Well-Equipped Research Laboratory

The department has a dedicated research lab for postgraduates, equipped with dissecting and compound microscopes, weighing scales, autoclaves, incubators, water and milk testing kits, and tools for field-based public health research, such as water quality check-ups and food safety assessments that meet community health needs.

Vaccine Storage Infrastructure (ILR and Deep Freezer)

An ice-lined refrigerator and deep freezer are maintained for vaccine storage, supporting the department's involvement in immunisation activities under the Universal Immunisation Programme.

Departmental Museum

A well-stocked museum houses specimens, models, charts, and entomology slides, arranged topic-wise to support teaching. For a subject that covers everything from vector-borne diseases to nutrition, having physical specimens and models on hand makes a real difference in how students learn the material.

Departmental Library

The library holds a substantial collection of books in community medicine and allied subjects, along with both Indian and international journals, giving students and faculty access to current research and reference material.

Procedures

Immunization Activities

The department actively takes part in immunisation drives under the Universal Immunisation Programme and keeps working together with the District Immunisation Officer, somehow. In June 2023, the nursing staff at both the rural and urban health training centres, along with the lady medical officers, attended training on immunisation activities at CHC Hapur to ensure frontline teams stay current with ongoing protocols and vaccine handling.

National Tuberculosis Elimination Program

The department collaborates with the District Hospital on implementing the Tuberculosis Elimination Programme, giving students direct exposure to how TB case detection, treatment adherence, and follow-up are managed at the community level, an experience that's quite different from textbook learning alone.

Rural and Urban Health Training Centre Services

Both training centres function as working healthcare facilities, equipped with a clinical laboratory, labour room, and minor OT. These centres handle routine patient care for the surrounding population while also serving as teaching sites where students get hands-on experience in community-based clinical care.

Community-Based Research and Surveys

Postgraduate students conduct field-based research as part of their mandatory dissertation work, looking into local health trends and challenges. This research feeds back into how the department and affiliated programmes approach public health planning in the area.

Internship Training in District Healthcare Settings

Through the structured rotation at CHC Hapur, interns spend dedicated time in the Medicine, Surgery, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology departments, building practical skills in managing a wide range of cases in a district hospital setting, which complements what they've learnt during their tertiary hospital postings.
